How to Increase Clientele

The Most Successful Barbershop/Salon I’ve Seen

The most successful barbershop/salon I’ve seen was built on its concept for success.

The concept was its location, close to a barbering & cosmetology school.  The location of the barbershop made it known by barbering & cosmetology students in search of a barbershop to work in.  Most students, which are the upcoming licensed barbering & cosmetology professionals of tomorrow, don’t know where they’re going to work when they obtain their licenses.  They just know that they want to work in a barbershop or salon where they can earn as much money as possible.

The vision behind www.BarberBeautician.com is that it provides an easy way for barbershop and salon owners whose establishments aren’t located near a barbering or cosmetology school to recruit barbering & cosmetology students ON-LINE.  By viewing barbering & cosmetology students’ profiles, barbershop and salon owners will be able to view students’:

  • Contact information;
  • Preferred work locations;
  • Areas of expertise;
  • Years of experience;
  • Number of existing clientele;
  • 360 degree pictures of their work;
  • An embedded video;
  • License exam date; and more.

As a barbershop or salon owner, this information helps you recruit the best professionals for your establishment.

To access barbering & cosmetology students at www.BarberBeautician.com, you must create a free barbershop, hair salon, nail salon, tanning salon, barber, hair stylist, or manicurist/pedicurist account.  Log in with your username and password and use the search box to find barbering & cosmetology professionals in your area.  Or, click on the students tab.  Remember, you can only access their profiles if you are logged in your account.

The internet is making our businesses better and information easier to access than ever before.  Don’t be left behind.  Add your profile to www.BarberBeautician.com.

Health & Dental Insurance for Our Industry

The sad truth about group rate health & dental insurance for barbering & cosmetology professionals is that it won’t happen unless your employer pays for you to have it.  The reason why other professions have access to group rate health insurance is because their employers pay the difference that the employees do not pay.

Here’s an example: Let’s say an insurance company charges $100.00 for health insurance.  Let’s also say you work for Hair, Inc., a company that purchased the $100.00 insurance and charges you $60.00 for your insurance coverage.  Hair, Inc., pays the remaining $40.00 so you can have insurance coverage for $60.00.

So, to qualify for group rate insurance, someone has to pay the remainder that’s owed to the insurance company.  If you work for yourself, you’re it.  The insurance companies want their whole amount, regardless of who pays for it.  However; the insurance companies may offer discounts on the $100.00 they charge if you bring a lot of business to them (a large group).

Don’t Let Anyone Get You Down!

As a barber, stylist, nail technician, make-up artist, etc., an important part of our daily work lives is being able to take a punch and keep on kicking.  The sad truth is that some people like making others feel badly.  We service those same people on a regular basis.  If you are new to working in the barbering & cosmetology industry, you will soon learn that being able to hold your own is a key part to being able to sustain.  Many people change professions because they simply don’t have what it takes to stay in this business.

Keep this in mind, no matter how good of a service you provide, some clients still won’t be pleased with your work because they aren’t pleased with themselves.  Be mindful of that every day.  Always think about the big picture before you respond to their negative actions.  You’re there to make money while having the best possible time doing it.  If everything else fails, stand your ground and give them what they’re asking for…alright, ignore that last sentence because I got carried away.  Try not to give them what they’re asking for.  Take the higher road and let God handle it.

Think Long Term by Making Barbering & Cosmetology Work for You

Barbering & Cosmetology is what you make of it.  They can be very rewarding professions if you work hard.  They can also be very challenging professions if you don’t.  Denzel Washington said it best, “Do what you have to do so you can do what you want to do.”  So, if you plan to reap benefits from barbering & cosmetology, you have to invest your time and money now in order for those investments to work for you later.  Invest the money you earn into things that will make your day-to-day life easier, such as a business of your own.  Set monetary goals and don’t stop until you achieve them, even if it includes working more hours.  Consider it working harder now to work easier later.  Besides, the physical stamina you currently have won’t always be there.

Here are a few tips to getting closer to your goals:

  1. Write your goals down on paper;
  2. Find out the requirements to achieve your goals;
  3. Do something to get you closer to your goals every day; and
  4. Don’t stop until your goals have been achieved.

Remember, if you truly want to achieve more, you have to do more.
